Do you know about the blue pottery tradition from Saschiz (a village from the Mureș County in Romania)?
Ceramic from Saschiz is highlighted by the cobalt blue color of the ceramic pieces on which various motifs appear in white. We can trace it back to the 7th century. The original recipe was lost, now we only can make assumptions about the technique used. Some experts think that the sgraffito technique must be used. This technique means applying two layers of ceramic paste of different colors on a vessel, the one on top being scratched in such a way that the lower layer can also be seen. Others support the fact that the batik technique should be. The batik technique means that the ornaments are drawn with fluid beeswax, heated and covered with blue enamel. On the parts soaked with beeswax, the enamel does not stick, leaving the decoration in the color of the base.
In the decoration of the plates and jugs, geometrical ornaments were used such as the point, the wavy line, the circle, the spiral. Birds such as the crow, the hen and the partridge were also present.
